La dette technique n'est pas un échec — c'est un arbitrage. Le problème commence quand on cesse de la suivre. Un cadre pour la rendre visible et la rembourser.
Technical debt isn't inherently bad — it's often a rational trade-off to ship faster. The problem is treating it as invisible. Unmanaged debt compounds: today's "we'll fix it later" becomes next year's rewrite.
A practical strategy doesn't require a dedicated "debt sprint" or a freeze on new features. It requires visibility, prioritization, and a rule for when debt gets paid down.
You can't manage what you don't measure. Maintain a living register of known debt: areas of the codebase that are hard to change, outdated dependencies, missing tests, or architectural shortcuts.
Tag debt in your issue tracker. Add a "tech-debt" or "refactor" label and require that every significant piece of debt has a ticket. When someone hits a painful area, they create or update the ticket. Over time you have a prioritized backlog.
Not all debt is equal. We use a simple matrix: how often does this code path get touched, and how expensive is it to fix?
One approach we've seen work: reserve roughly 20% of each sprint for debt reduction. Not a separate backlog — the team picks debt items that align with current work or that unblock upcoming features.
This prevents debt from being perpetually deferred. It also forces prioritization: with limited capacity, the team naturally tackles the highest-leverage items first.
Strategy only works if you slow the accumulation. Enforce a definition of done that includes tests and documentation for new code. Use code review checklists that ask "are we adding debt here?"
When you take on intentional debt, create the ticket immediately. Document the trade-off and the conditions under which you'll pay it back. Debt that's acknowledged and tracked is debt you can manage.
L'ingénierie de plateforme n'est pas un simple rebaptême du DevOps. Bien menée, elle réduit considérablement les frictions de livraison. Mal menée, elle crée une bureaucratie interne que personne n'utilise.
