Design tokens, gouvernance, documentation et stratégies d'adoption — comment bâtir un design system que les équipes ont envie d'utiliser.
A design system that nobody uses is just a style guide in a repo. The ones that stick are built for adoption: they solve real problems for designers and developers, they're governed so they don't drift, and they're documented so people can find and use them.
We've helped companies go from scattered components to a single source of truth that actually gets used across products. Here's what made the difference.
Design tokens — color, spacing, typography, shadow, border radius — are the foundation. Get these right first. When every team uses the same tokens, visual consistency follows even before you have a full component library.
Tokens should live in one place (e.g., a JSON or JS export) and feed both design tools (Figma variables) and code. Single source of truth. When marketing rebrands, you change the token file and regenerate; no hunting through components.
Without governance, the design system becomes a dumping ground. Someone adds a one-off component; someone else copies it with a tweak. Soon you have 12 buttons. Define a process: new components need a use case, design review, and implementation review. Deprecation is part of the process — when something is replaced, it's marked deprecated and removed on a schedule.
A small core team (design + engineering) owns the system and approves changes. Broader contributors can propose via RFC or PR, but the bar for inclusion is high: generic, reusable, documented.
Documentation isn't a PDF. It's a living site with examples, usage guidelines, and code snippets. Every component has: when to use it, when not to use it, props/API, and at least one real-world example. Include accessibility notes and keyboard/screen reader behavior.
Search and navigation matter. Developers need to find the right component in under a minute. Storybook or a custom docs site with good search is standard. Keep it in sync with releases — stale docs kill trust.
Adoption doesn't happen by mandate. It happens when using the system is easier than not using it. That means: publish as a package with a clear versioning story, provide migration guides from old patterns, and measure usage (e.g., which components are used in which apps).
Celebrate wins: when a team ships a feature using the system, highlight it. When someone contributes a component that gets used everywhere, recognize it. A design system that gets used is a product — treat it like one.
