Hypothesengetriebene Entwicklung, Nutzerforschung und schnelles Prototyping – wie Engineering-Teams mithelfen, das Richtige zu bauen.
Engineering teams are often handed a spec and told to build. The best outcomes come when engineering is part of discovery — shaping the problem, testing hypotheses, and validating with users before committing to a solution.
Product discovery isn't a phase that ends when development starts. It's a mindset: we're trying to learn the right thing to build, not just build the thing we thought of first.
Start with a hypothesis, not a feature. "We believe that if we show users a simplified checkout, they will complete purchases more often." That's testable. You can run an experiment — A/B test, prototype, interview — and get evidence before building the full solution.
Frame every significant initiative as a hypothesis with a success criterion. If we can't articulate what we'd need to see to know we're right, we're not ready to build.
User research in discovery isn't about satisfaction surveys. It's about understanding behavior, pain points, and context. Watch users do the task you're trying to improve. Ask why they do it that way. Identify where they get stuck or work around the product.
Engineers should be in the room (or on the call) when possible. Hearing users directly prevents the "telephone game" where product summarizes and nuance is lost. Even a few sessions per quarter change how the team prioritizes.
Prototypes are for learning, not for looking pretty. A clickable Figma flow, a Wizard of Oz backend (human behind the curtain), or a single-flow code prototype can answer "would users understand this?" or "does this flow feel right?" without building the whole system.
We time-box prototypes: one or two weeks max. The goal is to get something in front of users and iterate. If the prototype fails, we've saved months of development. If it works, we have confidence and clarity for the real build.
Discovery doesn't require a separate team. It requires discipline: reserve capacity for exploration, schedule regular user contact, and make "we don't know yet" an acceptable answer. Backlog items can be "run discovery on X" as well as "build Y."
The teams that ship the right thing are the ones that invest in learning before committing. Product discovery is how engineering helps ensure we're building the right thing, not just building the thing right.
